An amazing shop in the Melrose District of Downtown Phoenix—Pearly Mae’s Resale—has it all: furniture, home decor, art, lamps, vintage clothing and accessories plus services that include private shopping parties and Estate Sales. Not only will shoppers find “fun and funky” all in one place—they’ll like that it’s affordable!
Pearly Mae’s inventory is always changing and Owners Mae Sinclaire and Jeanne Wiesley’s goals are to carry well made, solid wood pieces in current styles, modern, retro and antiques furniture. One side of the shop carries vintage clothing and accessories for both men and women. Western snap shirts, cowboy boots, bolo ties, retro sports jerseys, crazy poly pants and a nice collection of cuff links are some of the choices for the guys. There are tons of items for the women, including disco sequin dresses, Boho style long dresses, poly pants, suede skirts, fun tops, sweaters, jackets and more There’s a huge selection of costume jewelry, crazy hats and a shoe room just for the gals.
After lives in the corporate world, Mae and Jeanne had their own shops for several years before combining forces and starting their joint venture in 2013. Over the years, they both discovered what they truly care about and what holds their interests so they were able to turn that into a great combination in creating their dream shop.
Mae’s interests are consignment, home staging, decorating and redoing pieces. She is great with color and making a room look like a picture in a magazine, yet still lived in. Jeanne has become a vintage clothing nut with a love for costuming and anything involving production on film or theater is her favorite. Quite a few local photographers come to Pearly Mae’s when getting ready for their next shoot, for inspiration pieces or just to wander through the shop until ideas hit them. The two love the creative energy that comes from watching an artist develop a character from an outfit or a photo shoot emerge from one piece of clothing.
Jeanne says, “We really love our new location on 7th Avenue. The area is a hot spot for what we carry and our shop is amazing. We have used every inch of the space to showcase our inventory of both clothing and accessories as well as home décor and furniture. Our expansion into Estate Sales gives us a new avenue for great inventory in the shop. Pearly Mae’s has also been a part of the costuming for local movies and theater groups.”
She adds, “Our shop is packed but doesn’t feel crowded and all of our clothing is cleaned and well displayed. We try our best to keep it organized and easy to wander around, we like to call it ‘organized chaos’. It is big, but each area has its own charm. If we don’t have something, we can help you find it. The Melrose area is a tight family and we all call each other daily for our clients—it’s one of the best things about being in this area.”
Although Mae and Jeanne are the shop’s main stays, they do have a great staff that helps along the way. Cheri, Rica, Jack and Deb help them run the place and Jeanne’s brother Jeff keeps them busy with the Estate Sale Company with its great crew.
Once a person has come by the shop, he or she becomes a friend and then a regular customer. The two feel very fortunate that the shop has allowed them to meet the folks they have and to enjoy what comes with owning the shop. They love that every day is an adventure.
Since there is a ton of activity going on right now, Mae and Jeanne do not see a need to add anything to the mix so future plans are being left open right now. Their eBay store has just reopened and they want to get back into that market again plus Estate Sales are increasing. However, they say, you never know what might be next!
